Prime Minister Narendra Modi today planted a sapling at the Buddha Jayanti Park in New Delhi under ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ campaign organised on the occasion of World Environment Day. This campaign aims to be a one-of-its-kind mass movement to plant crores of trees across the country.

Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav and Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena joined the gathering as well.

The Akashvani report highlights that World Environment Day, observed globally on June 5, serves as a call to action for raising awareness, fostering global collaboration, and promoting proactive measures to address environmental challenges. This initiative, spearheaded by the United Nations, aims to galvanize worldwide awareness and efforts to protect our natural world.

The inception of this day traces back to the United Nations General Assembly in 1972, during the seminal Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment. The following year, in 1973, the inaugural World Environment Day was commemorated, establishing a tradition of annual celebrations on June 5.

On this occasion, President Droupadi Murmu urged the public to unite in the pursuit of a more sustainable and verdant future.

In her social media message, President Murmu emphasized the critical role of environmental protection as a core duty, reminding us that we are stewards rather than proprietors of Earth’s resources. She highlighted the pressing issue of climate change and its impact on the most susceptible populations.

Echoing the sentiment, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar extended his World Environment Day greetings, underscoring the intrinsic link between human existence and ecological balance as the cornerstone of sustainable living. He invoked India’s age-old values that advocate living in consonance with nature and called upon citizens to commit to sustainable practices and the conservation of our planet.
