Boston University has concluded its extensive national search to appointing Katy Collins as the first director of its new LGBTQIA+ Student Resource Centre.

Collins took on the role of interim director at the close of the previous spring semester, following their tenure as the director of student outreach and engagement within the Dean of Students office.

Situated on the second mezzanine at 808 Commonwealth Avenue, the LGBTQIA+ Student Resource Centre was inaugurated at the end of 2023. It serves as a versatile space for BU’s LGBTQIA+ student community, offering study and relaxation areas, meeting rooms for clubs and presentations, complimentary gender-affirming products, and hosts community and educational events.

The quest for a permanent director commenced last year, led by a search committee formed by then-provost and chief academic officer Jean Morrison. The committee, which included faculty, students, and staff members, was in pursuit of an individual with an innovative leadership approach and the capability to foster community and enhance LGBTQIA+ student life at BU. Jason Campbell-Foster, dean of students and co-chair of the committee, expressed that with Collins’ leadership, they have secured a fervent advocate who will elevate the voices within the queer community and establish a supportive and empowering environment.

“Katy has been exceptional as interim director, laying down a solid programmatic foundation for the center. Their vast experience in student affairs will be pivotal in shaping a forward-thinking and unique future for the center,” says Campbell-Foster.

Collins’ academic journey began with anthropology at New College of Florida, followed by two master’s degrees from Simmons College in gender and cultural studies and communications management. Before joining BU in 2019, they held positions at Simmons as an academic advisor, at Berklee College of Music as a resident director, and at New College of Florida. This diverse experience renders them exceptionally suited for this pioneering role at BU, according to Victoria Shannon Sahani, associate provost for community and inclusion and committee co-chair.

Sahani highlights that Collins’ previous roles have equipped them with an in-depth understanding of BU students’ identities, needs, and concerns. “Katy’s daily interactions showcase their vigor, passion, and proficiency for this directorship. Their genuine connection with students stems from their own experiences. We are incredibly lucky to have Katy leading our student community,” Sahani remarks.

For Collins, who identifies as queer, this position is a fulfillment of their early academic aspirations. “I always envisioned myself directing a queer student center at a university,” Collins shares. “However, upon graduation, such roles were scarce, prompting me to adapt my career path.”
